Android apps are bits of software that run the Android operating system. They can be installed on Android tablets, TVs and phones. They’re extremely efficient in using the touchscreen, camera and GPS features of the device. Having lots of apps installed on an Android phone, however, can affect battery life and performance.

The process of creating Android apps requires a deep understanding of the Android platform, including its design principles and frameworks. It also requires an appropriate app architecture, which separates UIand OS-related code into components that have shared duties. The system is able to activate these components asynchronously by using a broadcast mechanism that is triggered by intents.

Kotlin is gaining popularity as a language that is used for Android development. Both are supported by the Android SDK. A large developer community is available online to assist those who are new to the language and solve issues.

The Android OS is divided into layers. The application layer contains the standard apps that are included with the OS, in addition to any proprietary apps that are specifically designed for specific devices, for example, a music player or a phone dialer. The Android application layer comes with customized firmware, such as CyanogenMod or OMFGB. These can be installed to modify the functionality of certain devices.

Compatibility is a different factor which prevents some apps from working. If an app has been launched for the US market but isn’t compatible with your European device, it won’t function on it and will be displayed as « incompatible » in the Play Store.
